Root Canals in Wheelers Hill

A New Age of Root Canals
Have you been putting off a visit to Waverley Park Dental Care because you fear you may need a root canal? You’ll be happy to hear that with dental advances and local anaesthetics, most people have little if any pain with today’s root canals.

A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth, rather than removing it.

Why Would I Need Root Canal Therapy?

In simple terms, a root canal removes infected tissue from the roots of the tooth beneath the gums. This is done to:

  • Save the part of the tooth above the gums
  • Minimise the risk of further damage
  • Prevent loss of the tooth entirely, requiring more extensive and expensive treatment.

What’s Involved?

A root canal involves removing damaged pulp – the small, threadlike tissue in the centre of the tooth. Once the damaged pulp is gone, the remaining space is cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. Your dentist may prescribe an antibiotic for the infection prior to performing the actual procedure.

The root canal procedure itself begins with a local anaesthetic. Once you’re comfortably numb, the dentist removes the damaged or infected nerve tissue and fills the infected root with an antibiotic to treat any remaining infection. The tooth root is then filled.

Lastly, a crown is usually placed over the tooth to protect it, because of weakness and instability resulting from damage caused by the infection. The entire process typically takes place over several visits, and your treated, restored tooth can last a lifetime with proper care.
