Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment): treats the inside of the tooth. It is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth becomes inflamed or is infected through deep decay or injury. The symptoms of an infected tooth can range from dull ache to severe pain and the tooth may be tender on biting. The aim of root canal treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection.
